for this episode, i will escort you around a peaceful, small alley in ningbo. this alley is unbelievably intertwined with "san zi jing", the three character classic! the municipal annal for ningbo reads that nianshu alley forking off at xianxue street on the east side of moon lake was previously known as "the alley of minister's residence". during the southern song dynasty (1127- 1279 a.d.) over 700 years ago, wang yinglin, educator and confucian scholar, was born here. in honor of wang's prominence, the alley in front of his residence at the right gate was named after "nianshu", referring "the alley of study". wang provided confucian moralities with short and simple texts in his work san zi jing, making it suitable for teaching young children in ancient china.

nowadays, the original nianshu alley has become part of the surrounding modern residence buildings. outside the buildings of both sides, the house signs of nianshu alley survive. the alley embraces a sense of harmony, gentleness and serenity. also, in memory of wang, on zhenming road nearby, a sculpture of wang with his young pupils was established.
