the road of baizhang is named after its length. have you ever heard of it? baizhang road, previously known as baizhang street, ran through linqiao bridge to reach mihang bridge for a distance of 99.7 chinese zhang (332.3 meters). therefore, the street was named “baizhang”, meaning “a hundred zhang in length”.
in 1934, it was extended eastward to maixi bridge. on this road, nowadays, the renowned rainbow apparel market is still open. however, due to the emergence of new shopping centers, the old market has lost its popularity attracting few customers. meanwhile, an increasing number of trendy cafes are popping up. the qita (seven pagoda) temple across the road accommodates numerous worshippers. in urban ningbo, it boasts the largest and the best-preserved buddhist temple. deep inside the temple, a library called qixin, meaning “confide”, provides the bustling downtown with a place of tranquility.
