fun fact! an old street in ningbo gained its name from an unusual act of filial piety. have you heard the story? during the period of shaosheng to xuanhe (1094~1125 a.d.) in the northern song dynasty (960-1127 a.d.), yang qing cut off meat from his own leg to feed his sick father who couldn't afford medicine. when his mother also suffered sickness, yang cut off meat from his breast and boiled the flesh with medicine to treat his mother. later, his deeds were recognized by royalty. in the 3rd year of the xuanhe period (1121), officials of yin county in ningbo constructed an archway in front of yang's house saying “chong xiao” – an expression of admiration for filial piety. in the 7th year of the shaoxing period (1137) in the southern song dynasty (1127-1279 a.d.), the royal court feted yang as a role model of filial piety. since then, his story has spread more widely. “chongxiao fang” is also known as “xiaowen fang”, manifesting the household code of filial piety. and the small street nearby along the river is called xiaowen street. the modern xiaowen street neighbors many ancient houses, including fu hou ancient library, ye's house, along with many other cultural preservation units and centers at municipal and provincial levels. in addition, it is home to a variety of restaurants whose retro-style retains the flavor and characteristics of ningbo's past.
